Why Become a Master Recycler?

Comments by Master Recyclers (fall 2009 class) on what they've learned/how they've changed since starting the class

***Composting more ***Having a positive influence on other members of my household

Able to educate family and extended family on packaging

I got my parents really going on recycling and composting

My kids really got on board, they like the deskside box at home, esp for drawing paper

Had a family member w/personal bad experience with toxic cleaners who now is very receptive to my idea of using “green” cleaners

Maybe it’s not so good to be the “recycling cop” and nag people all the time, a subtle influence is better

I really like the theme of “meeting people where they are”

I use humor that YES I am the weird recycling geek pawing through the garbage
Already finding myself answering people’s questions and I know where to get info
Am sharing more enthusiasm with others

Was able to answer a business reporter’s Q&A on garbage

Using my manual at work and sharing info w/co-workers

I know more resources in order to answer questions

Have more credibility with family & co-workers as MR, I’m not just “making this up”

I like being around like-minded people with similar interests

Find myself answering “What is that?” about the Master Recycler class itself

Got a store clerk empowered to start asking people “Did you bring your own bags?” after talking with her about what I was learning at the MR class
Learn more what could be recycled

Quit putting plastic bags in the curbside bin

Now I question everything, can I recycle this?

I know the “why’s” on things you can’t put in the blue bin (lids, plastic bags, etc)

I’m digging through my deskside box for scratch paper

It really struck me how difficult it is for rural folks to recycle compared to those in metro area
I reach for something on the shelf and think: what am I gonna do with the packaging when I’m done?

Being better on NOT using plastic bags in the first place (bring own container etc)

I feel BAD about the amount of stuff I have to throw in the trash (small plastic containers, ‘wet-strength’ boxes, etc)

I did a waste audit on myself

I have been working toward “zero waste” personally for years yet still learned things in this class

I was able to reduce my trash and lower my garbage bill
Feel more excitement, energy, enthusiasm about waste reduction & recycling
