1st plastic bottle recycle facility in NW! Two plastics-industry veterans and the state’s bottle-handling cooperative Wednesday announced plans to build the Northwest’s first facility for recycling plastic water and soft drink bottles. The $10 million complex, slated to begin operating in mid-2010 on four acres owned by the Port of St. Helens, was made possible by state legislation that set a 5-cent deposit on bottle-water containers, one of its backers said. The law took effect in January. Bottles made of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) are now collected at 3,000 grocery stores in the state by the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative, according to reporter Jonathan Brinckman. (Note: Contrary to what the Oregonian reports in this article, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission – not the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative -- administers the state’s bottle bill.) | |||
